How to Take a DNA Test in Mauritius: Home Sampling, Shipping and Legal Use

Taking a DNA test in Mauritius can help answer several types of questions. You may wish to confirm a biological relationship, investigate paternity or maternity, compare family members, trace a paternal or maternal line, or explore your ancestral origins.


When the analysis is arranged remotely, the DNA test itself is not performed at home. The participants only collect the biological samples, usually by rubbing a swab inside the mouth. The samples are then sent to a specialised laboratory, where the DNA is extracted, analysed and compared.


Take a DNA Test in Mauritius

As many specialist laboratories are located outside Mauritius, receiving a collection kit before taking the samples can add an unnecessary international delivery stage. For compatible tests, a simpler option is to prepare the collection material locally, complete the cheek swabs and send them directly to the laboratory.

However, technical feasibility and legal validity are separate matters. A sample collected privately at home may provide information for personal use, but it should not automatically be treated as evidence for changing civil status, resolving inheritance matters or establishing legal filiation.


What is a DNA test?


A DNA test examines selected parts of a person’s genetic material.

DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, contains biological information passed from one generation to the next. For autosomal DNA, a person generally inherits one copy of each chromosome from their biological mother and the other from their biological father.

This transmission allows laboratories to identify shared genetic markers and assess whether the profiles of two or more people are compatible with a proposed biological relationship.


The markers and statistical methods used depend on the purpose of the test. A direct paternity test, a sibling test, a Y-chromosome comparison and an ancestry analysis do not examine genetic information in exactly the same way.


Relationship DNA tests


A relationship DNA test compares the genetic profiles of two or more participants to assess whether their DNA supports a specific family relationship.


Depending on the people available for testing, the analysis may involve:

  • a presumed father and child;

  • a presumed mother and child;

  • two or more alleged siblings;

  • grandparents and a grandchild;

  • an aunt or uncle and a niece or nephew;

  • male relatives from the same paternal line;

  • relatives linked through the same maternal line.


Paternity and maternity tests


A direct paternity test compares the child’s genetic profile with that of the presumed father.

At each marker, the laboratory checks whether the genetic information inherited by the child is compatible with the presumed father’s profile. When several incompatible markers are identified, paternity can be excluded. When the profiles are compatible, the laboratory calculates the statistical strength of the evidence.

A maternity test follows the same general principle by comparing the child with the presumed biological mother.


Indirect family relationship tests


Indirect tests are used when the parent in question cannot participate.

They may compare siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces or nephews. These analyses are more complex because more distant relatives share less DNA and because the amount inherited by each person varies.


The laboratory normally evaluates at least two hypotheses. For example:

  • the participants are biologically related in the stated way;

  • the participants are unrelated or have a different relationship.


The result may be expressed through a relationship index, a likelihood ratio or a probability. The calculation should follow recognised biostatistical principles, such as those described in the International Society for Forensic Genetics recommendations on paternity testing.


Adding another informative relative can sometimes strengthen the analysis. For example, including the child’s known biological mother may help the laboratory separate the maternal contribution from the genetic information being investigated.

Indirect tests can nevertheless produce inconclusive results. They should not be presented as having the same discriminatory power as a direct parent-child comparison.


Ancestry and genetic genealogy tests


An ancestry DNA test does not necessarily seek to confirm a specific relationship between two identified people.


Depending on the provider and the type of analysis, it may help a person to:

  • estimate broad geographical origins;

  • investigate a paternal or maternal lineage;

  • search for genetic matches in a database;

  • add information to a family tree;

  • identify previously unknown family branches;

  • connect with possible distant relatives.


An ancestry estimate is produced by comparing selected genetic markers with reference populations held by the provider. It is not a direct reading of nationality, ethnicity or cultural identity.


Two companies may return different percentages because they use different databases, population categories and algorithms. Results may also change when a provider updates its reference panels or analytical methods.

This is especially relevant in Mauritius, where many families have ancestry connected to several regions and historical migrations. A percentage assigned to a geographical category should therefore be understood as an estimate, not as a definitive statement about identity.

What happens when the samples reach the laboratory?


The cheek swab is only the first stage of the analysis.


After the samples arrive, the laboratory will generally:

  1. register the samples under the relevant case reference;

  2. check the packaging, identification and sample condition;

  3. extract DNA from the cells collected on the swabs;

  4. amplify the selected genetic regions;

  5. establish a genetic profile for each participant;

  6. compare the profiles or reference populations;

  7. perform the required statistical calculations;

  8. carry out quality checks;

  9. prepare the final report.


A cheek swab is sometimes described informally as a saliva test. In practice, the laboratory mainly needs the cells released from the inside of the cheek rather than a large quantity of liquid saliva.


The analysis period normally begins only after all required samples and documents have been received and accepted by the laboratory.


How to collect a DNA sample at home in Mauritius


The quality of the sample is important. Too few cheek cells, contamination, moisture or a mix-up between participants can prevent the laboratory from producing a usable profile.

The instructions issued for your particular case must always take priority. Laboratories may require different numbers of swabs, forms or packaging methods.


What equipment is needed?


For a standard home collection, you will usually need:

  • sterile buccal swabs purchased from a pharmacy, or new unused cotton buds if permitted;

  • clean disposable gloves;

  • clean scissors when using double-ended cotton buds;

  • one clean glass or drying container for each participant;

  • one paper envelope for each participant;

  • one larger envelope for the complete shipment;

  • the consent forms and shipping documents;

  • the client code and case references supplied by the service.


Purpose-made buccal swabs are preferable because they are designed for collecting cheek cells. Ordinary cotton buds should only be used when the laboratory has confirmed that they are acceptable.

Precautions before collecting the sample


For at least one hour before the cheek swab, the participant should normally avoid:

  • eating;

  • drinking anything other than water;

  • smoking or vaping;

  • chewing gum;

  • brushing their teeth;

  • using mouthwash.


The mouth may be rinsed with plain water shortly before collection.

These precautions reduce the presence of food, toothpaste and other residues that could interfere with sample quality.


How to perform the cheek swab


Use a separate set of equipment for each participant.

  1. Wash and dry your hands, then put on clean gloves.

  2. Remove one swab without touching the cotton tip.

  3. Rub it firmly against the inside of the cheek, gums and the area around the mouth for the period stated in the instructions.

  4. Rotate the swab during collection so that different parts of the cotton come into contact with the cheek.

  5. Place it upright in a clean glass or another suitable holder.

  6. Allow it to air-dry completely.

  7. Repeat the procedure using the required number of swabs.

  8. Place the dry swabs in the paper envelope assigned to that participant.


The procedure specifies four separate swabs for each participant and recommends leaving them to dry for at least 30 minutes, or longer when necessary.

Do not place wet swabs in a sealed plastic bag. Trapped moisture can encourage degradation and make DNA extraction more difficult.


Identify every participant clearly


Each inner envelope should include the information requested by the laboratory, which may include:

  • full name or participant reference;

  • date of birth;

  • sex, when relevant to the selected analysis;

  • stated family relationship;

  • sample type;

  • client or case number.


Never place samples from different participants in the same inner envelope.


Why prepare your own DNA collection kit in Mauritius?


When a laboratory is located in Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States or another overseas destination, receiving a kit can create two international shipping stages:

  1. delivery of the empty collection materials to Mauritius;

  2. return of the completed samples to the laboratory.


Preparing the collection material locally removes the first journey. Participants can begin once they have received the case number, forms, instructions and laboratory address.


Start the collection sooner


There is no need to wait for an empty parcel to reach Mauritius before collecting the samples.

Suitable swabs may be purchased locally from a pharmacy. When authorised by the laboratory, new cotton buds may also be used.


This arrangement does not shorten the laboratory analysis itself. It only reduces the delay before collection and removes the initial shipment of an empty kit.

Organise several participants more easily


A no-kit procedure can be useful when:

  • several family members must participate;

  • the participants live in different parts of Mauritius;

  • one participant lives in Rodrigues or abroad;

  • some family members are already in Europe;

  • a sample must be arranged for a child;

  • the samples must be prepared before a particular date.


The participants do not always need to be in the same place. They can collect their samples separately, provided that they use the same case references and follow the laboratory’s identification instructions.


Separate shipments may be possible, but this must be agreed in advance. The laboratory needs to know that several parcels belong to the same case.


Reduce the risks associated with the initial delivery


Removing the outward shipment of an empty kit reduces the risk of that first parcel being delayed, lost or damaged.

It does not remove the need to transport the biological samples. The completed swabs must still be packaged properly and sent to the correct laboratory address.


How does a DNA test without a delivered kit work?


Step 1: Choose the appropriate DNA test


The test must match the biological question.

A paternity test, sibling test, Y-chromosome test and ancestry test are not interchangeable. Choosing the wrong analysis may produce a valid laboratory result that does not answer the original question.


For a complex family case, provide the service with:

  • the people available for testing;

  • their presumed relationships;

  • their sex when this affects the test;

  • known biological relationships;

  • any parents or close relatives who could also participate;

  • whether the result is for personal or official use.


Do not order an indirect test simply because the direct parent is unavailable without first checking whether the proposed participants can provide enough genetic information.


Step 2: Receive the case documents


After the case is opened, you should receive the information needed to prepare the samples.

This may include:

  • a client code;

  • participant references;

  • the number of swabs required;

  • consent forms;

  • envelope identification rules;

  • collection instructions;

  • the laboratory’s postal address;

  • shipping instructions.


Each adult participant should give informed consent. Where a participant is a child or cannot consent independently, the authorisation must be provided by the person legally entitled to act on their behalf.


Step 3: Collect, dry and identify the samples


Follow the laboratory’s instructions exactly.

The swabs should be:

  • rubbed for the required period;

  • fully air-dried;

  • kept separate for each participant;

  • placed in paper envelopes;

  • correctly identified;

  • accompanied by the required forms.


Never touch the cotton tip with your fingers. Never exchange glasses, envelopes or drying surfaces between participants.


Step 4: Send the samples from Mauritius


Place the individual paper envelopes and required documents inside a larger protective envelope.

Use a tracked international postal or courier service that accepts the contents and delivers to the laboratory’s country. Carrier rules for biological material and customs documentation vary, so confirm acceptance before posting rather than assuming that every service will carry the samples.


When a customs declaration is required, follow the wording supplied by the laboratory. Some laboratories ask for a description such as “non-infectious human buccal swabs for DNA analysis” and a nominal value because the samples have no commercial resale value. Do not invent a description or declare a false value; use the laboratory’s instructions and the carrier’s requirements.


Keep the tracking receipt until the laboratory confirms that the samples have been registered.


Step 5: Wait for laboratory registration and analysis


Transport time is separate from analysis time.

The laboratory’s turnaround period begins only after:

  • every required sample has arrived;

  • the documents have been checked;

  • the samples have been registered;

  • sufficient DNA has been obtained.


A straightforward relationship test using good-quality cheek swabs may be completed within several working days after registration. An indirect relationship analysis, non-standard sample or failed extraction can take longer.


Ancestry tests commonly require more time because the genetic profile must be compared with larger databases and processed through the provider’s own matching system.


Does a home DNA test have legal value in Mauritius?


A freely collected home sample does not provide independent proof of the participant’s identity.

The laboratory can analyse the swab it receives, but it cannot confirm that the sample genuinely belongs to the person named on the envelope. There is no independent identity check or controlled chain of custody.

This distinction is important in Mauritius.

Section 8 of the DNA Identification Act 2009 states that a forensic analysis intended to establish filiation under the Mauritian Civil Code may be carried out by the Forensic Science Laboratory where a judge has made an order or where the relevant parties consent to provide their DNA samples. Section 9 also provides for samples falling under the Act to be collected by a qualified person and handled in accordance with Forensic Science Laboratory procedures.


Mauritian courts can therefore use DNA evidence in filiation proceedings. In Ally Khan v Abdool, a DNA test was ordered under section 8 during paternity proceedings, and the subsequent appeal examined how that genetic evidence should be assessed alongside the other evidence in the case.


This does not mean that any private report ordered online will automatically be accepted by a court or used to amend a birth certificate.


A test intended for an official procedure may require:

  • verified identity documents;

  • witnessed or professionally collected samples;

  • documented consent;

  • a continuous chain of custody;

  • controlled packaging and transportation;

  • a laboratory or institution accepted for the procedure;

  • compliance with the court’s or authority’s instructions.


Before collecting samples for filiation, inheritance, maintenance, immigration, nationality or civil-status proceedings, obtain advice from the relevant Mauritian authority or a qualified Mauritian legal professional. Starting with an informal home test may result in the samples having to be collected and analysed again under an official procedure.


Protecting consent and genetic information


DNA contains sensitive personal and family information. Collection should never be treated as an ordinary household procedure carried out without the participant’s knowledge.


Before testing, participants should understand:

  • why the analysis is being performed;

  • which relationship or information is being investigated;

  • where the samples will be sent;

  • which laboratory will analyse them;

  • how the results will be delivered;

  • how long the samples and profiles may be retained;

  • how deletion or destruction may be requested;

  • whether the result is private or intended for official use.


A competent provider should clearly explain its consent, privacy, storage and data-protection procedures before samples are submitted.


Conclusion


Taking a DNA test in Mauritius does not necessarily require waiting for an overseas collection kit.

For compatible relationship tests, the participants can prepare suitable collection materials locally, perform cheek swabs at home, allow them to dry and send them directly to the laboratory. This removes one international shipment and can allow the procedure to begin sooner.


The correct test must still be selected carefully. A direct paternity test, an indirect sibling analysis and an ancestry test answer different questions and use different forms of genetic comparison.


The intended use also matters. A privately collected sample may provide information for personal purposes, but it does not automatically meet the requirements of an official filiation or court procedure in Mauritius. Consent, identity verification, chain of custody and the applicable Mauritian process must be considered before collection begins.


Can I buy a DNA test from a pharmacy in Mauritius?

A pharmacy may stock sterile buccal swabs or other collection materials, although availability will vary. It does not perform the genetic analysis itself.

DNA extraction, profile creation and relationship calculations must be completed by a specialised laboratory. Purchasing swabs is therefore not the same as purchasing a complete DNA analysis.


Do I have to receive a DNA kit in Mauritius?

Not necessarily.

Can ordinary cotton buds be used?
