DNA Testing in Vietnam: What the Loci Institute Offers, and What It Means for UK Families

Looking into a DNA test in Vietnam concerns far more people than you might expect. Families separated by history, international adoptions, immigration and family reunion files, cross-border inheritance disputes, searches for relatives who disappeared decades ago: the circumstances vary enormously, yet they nearly always end at the same crossroads. Who should carry out the analysis, and will the report still be worth anything once you are back in the UK?


DNA Testing in Vietnam

One of the most visible providers in the country is the Loci Institute (Viện Sinh Học Phân Tử Loci), a Vietnamese establishment specialising in molecular biology and relationship testing. Here is what it offers, how much weight its technical claims actually carry, and what to check before you commit if you are based in the UK.


Who is the Loci Institute?


An institute rather than a routine testing lab


Loci presents itself as a research and applications institute in molecular biology and medical genetics rather than a conventional analytical laboratory. Its day-to-day work, though, is very concrete: parentage testing, extended kinship analysis and genetic identification.


The choice of words is deliberate. The institute highlights the professors, doctors and students it hosts for research work, along with a scientific board said to provide regular oversight. It is a claim to authority, designed to set Loci apart from the many private operators that have appeared on the Vietnamese market over the past decade.


The figures the institute publishes


According to its own communications, Loci reports more than fifteen years of activity, over 70,000 samples analysed and more than 5,000 individual "DNA cards" issued. It describes itself as the country's pioneer and largest operator in the field.

These numbers come from the establishment itself and have not been verified by an independent third party. They tell you something useful about volume, which is not nothing, but volume is not the same as analytical quality.


What DNA tests does Loci offer?


The range is broad, which reflects the institute's dual role: serving private family questions on one hand, and official case files on the other.


Paternity and maternity testing


This is the core business, and Loci draws a distinction that matters a great deal:

  • Private, "civil" use. Settling a doubt inside a family, with no administrative purpose. The result is informative only.

  • Legal use. Birth registration, acknowledgement of paternity or maternity, a change of name, court proceedings, immigration files, nationality applications or documents submitted to an embassy. The procedure is tighter here, with identity checks on everyone taking part.


The institute states that its legal-purpose results are recognised in Vietnam by the courts, justice departments, local authorities and embassies. That recognition applies on Vietnamese soil. It says nothing at all about how the same document would be treated by a family court in England and Wales, a point we return to below.


Extended kinship testing


When the parent in question is unavailable, has died or refuses to take part, the analysis can run through other family members instead. Loci offers grandparent-to-grandchild tests, aunt or uncle to niece or nephew comparisons, and sibling testing.

Depending on the case, these rely on the Y chromosome passed from father to son, on X chromosome markers, or on mitochondrial DNA inherited through the maternal line. They are technically more demanding than a straightforward father-child comparison and usually produce a likelihood rather than a clean yes or no.


Prenatal paternity testing


Loci also offers paternity analysis during pregnancy, referring to both non-invasive and invasive approaches, and stresses the safety of mother and foetus.


An important clarification for UK readers: prenatal paternity testing is lawful here, but it sits in a category of its own. At least one laboratory on the Ministry of Justice list states plainly that complex analyses such as prenatal paternity testing fall outside the scope of its ISO 17025 accreditation. It should also never be confused with non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPT), which looks for chromosomal conditions and answers a completely different medical question.

This is one of the institute's signature specialisms, and probably the most emotionally loaded in a country where many families are still searching for missing relatives. The work involves bone fragments and degraded samples, material in which DNA is scarce, broken into short pieces and frequently contaminated.

Loci says it has the technical capacity for these difficult samples. Work of this kind requires dedicated protocols, a tightly controlled environment and cautious interpretation, because partial profiles are the norm rather than the exception.


Searching for missing relatives, and the DNA database


The institute is associated with family reunion programmes broadcast on Vietnamese television, notably the show "Tuấn Vỹ – Kết nối yêu thương". It also reports building a DNA database intended to help trace family connections, with clients able to have their genetic profile stored on request.


That option deserves a pause. Keeping a profile in a searchable database does make future matches possible, but it commits an unusually sensitive piece of personal data for the long term.


Technology and reliability: how much do the claims mean?


PCR, STR markers and capillary electrophoresis, in plain terms


Loci describes a technical chain that is entirely standard in relationship testing. DNA is first extracted from the sample, then amplified by PCR, a method that copies the fragments of interest many times over so there is enough material to work with. Those fragments are then sorted by capillary electrophoresis, a technique that separates them by size.


What actually gets compared are markers called STRs, short for short tandem repeats. These are brief stretches of DNA repeated a variable number of times from one person to the next. Each of us inherits half of these variations from our mother and half from our father, which makes them an excellent tool for family comparison. It is also the reason an ancestry test and a parentage test are not the same analysis: both read DNA, but not the same markers and not for the same purpose.


The institute reports using a commercial amplification kit covering up to 25 STR markers, alongside automated genetic analysers and dedicated interpretation software. That is standard equipment in any serious relationship-testing laboratory, in Asia as much as in Europe.


What "99.999999%" actually means


Loci advertises accuracy of up to 99.999999%. Figures like this turn up across the whole sector and deserve unpacking, because they are widely misread.


A parentage test does not work symmetrically. Where there is no biological link, the mismatches between profiles are unmistakable and exclusion is close to certain. Where the link does exist, the laboratory cannot prove identity outright. What it calculates is the probability that the observed results are explained by biological parentage rather than by coincidence. The more markers analysed, the closer that probability creeps to 100% without ever quite arriving.


That probability also depends on how common each genetic variant is in the reference population, which matters enormously in international cases. The recommendations issued by the Paternity Testing Commission of the International Society for Forensic Genetics set out how these calculations should be made, address population substructure and immigration casework specifically, and insist that the report spell out the assumptions behind the numbers. A credible result is never just an isolated percentage.


ISO 13485 is good news, but not the news you might think


The institute makes a great deal of its ISO 13485 certification. That is a genuine sign of structure, but it helps to know what the standard actually covers.

ISO 13485 is a quality management standard for medical devices. It demonstrates a controlled organisation, documented procedures and traceability. Useful, but not aimed at analytical testing.


In the UK, the benchmark for a testing laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025, awarded here by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). This is not a stylistic preference. To join the Ministry of Justice's list of accredited bodies, a laboratory must hold ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation issued by an accreditation body that is a full member or recognised signatory of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation.

Geography, in other words, is not the obstacle. The standard is. Accreditation to ISO 13485 does not substitute for it, and this is exactly the sort of distinction worth weighing up when you are deciding which DNA testing laboratory to use.


One last point on method. Loci notes that it uses the same technology as the FBI, the Australian Federal Police and the Singapore Police Force. Perfectly true, and not very discriminating: STR analysis is the global standard in genetic identification. What separates one laboratory from another is the rigour of its controls, not the name of the technique.


Turnaround times and practical arrangements


The institute runs two main laboratories, in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and quotes short turnaround times for father-child or mother-child testing: one working day as standard, with an express option advertised at four hours. Complex cases, particularly those involving human remains, take considerably longer, sometimes several weeks.

Loci offers home sample collection in the areas its teams cover, and undertakes to repeat the analysis free of charge when a first test returns an exclusion. That second practice is sound laboratory habit: an exclusion should always be confirmed before a family is told.


Genetic data protection: the section UK readers should not skip


The institute describes a compartmentalised set-up, with separate teams for advice, sample collection, laboratory analysis and the release of results. Samples are said to be anonymised by barcode and tracked in dedicated software.

That is a coherent arrangement. What it does not answer is the question a UK resident actually needs answered: which rules govern your data once it leaves the country?

Vietnam is not covered by UK adequacy regulations, so it is not treated as offering protection equivalent to the UK's own regime. It is fair to note that the picture there has changed recently: the Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 91/2025/QH15) came into force on 1 January 2026, classes genetic and health data as sensitive personal data, and requires written or electronically authenticated consent before such data can be processed, with the Ministry of Public Security acting as regulator. That is a real step forward compared with the previous decree-level rules.


Even so, enforcing those rights in practice, from the UK, against a provider you engaged privately, is another matter entirely. Before you commit, ask three plain questions: how long are the sample and the profile kept, can you request their destruction, and is the profile added to a searchable database? The third question matters most if you have signed up for a "DNA card" or any kind of storage service. What this means if you live in the UK


Private tests are legal, but consent is not optional


Unlike some European countries, which prohibit private parentage testing outright, the UK allows "peace of mind" tests. There is one non-negotiable condition. Under section 45 of the Human Tissue Act 2004, holding bodily material intending to have its DNA analysed without qualifying consent is a criminal offence across the UK, informally known as DNA theft, carrying up to three years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. Written informed consent is needed from every adult taking part, and from someone with parental responsibility for any child.


Court proceedings: the accredited list is the whole point


In England and Wales, courts can direct a scientific test to determine parentage under section 20 of the Family Law Reform Act 1969. Only laboratories on the Ministry of Justice's list of accredited bodies may carry out those tests. A report from anywhere else, however technically sound, does not do the job that a section 20 test does.


Immigration and nationality: use a Home Office-approved provider


Where a biological relationship needs evidencing in a visa, nationality or refugee family reunion application, DNA evidence is voluntary. The Home Office cannot compel it, and declining cannot by itself be held against an applicant. When it is provided, the sampling must be taken and independently witnessed by an approved collector acting for a laboratory on the Home Office's approved list, which is reviewed annually. Approved providers can arrange witnessed collection overseas, including in Vietnam, which is usually the sensible route when one participant is there and the other is here. Applicants pay for testing themselves.


Getting a Vietnamese DNA report accepted in the UK


A foreign report carries no automatic weight. If it is to be used in an official file, several conditions typically stack up: sampling must have been carried out under identity verification, the chain of custody must be documented end to end, the laboratory must be recognised by whichever authority is receiving the file, and the document must be translated and legalised.


The practical advice is simple. Ask the receiving authority first, whether that is a court, a consulate, the Home Office or a registrar, what it requires. Running the analysis before asking that question is how people end up paying twice.


The bottom line


Loci comes across as a structured, well-equipped and clearly identifiable operator on the Vietnamese market, with an uncommon specialism in degraded samples and in tracing missing relatives. For a local need, in Vietnam, those strengths are relevant.

For a reader based in the UK, though, the technical question is not the decisive one.


What matters first is the purpose of the test, the legal framework where you live, and the requirements of whoever will receive the result. An analysis that is faultless in the laboratory is still unusable if it was carried out outside the expected procedure.

If your reasons are purely personal, check the accreditations and the data retention policy before you order. If the test has an administrative or legal purpose, start with the framework and only then choose the laboratory.


Is a DNA test carried out in Vietnam valid in the UK?

Not automatically. For court proceedings in England and Wales, a parentage test directed under section 20 of the Family Law Reform Act 1969 must be carried out by a laboratory on the Ministry of Justice's accredited list. For immigration and nationality files, the Home Office expects testing by a provider on its approved list, with sampling independently witnessed. A privately obtained overseas report does not meet either requirement, however reliable the analysis itself may be.


How much does a paternity test at Loci cost?

The institute advertises 1,600,000 VND per sample with a 24-hour turnaround, and 3,000,000 VND per sample for the four-hour service, for legal-purpose testing. That works out at roughly £45 to £90 per person depending on the exchange rate. Since parentage testing needs at least two participants, the total is at minimum double that.


What is ISO 13485 worth for a DNA laboratory?

It shows a documented quality system, which is a positive, but the standard belongs to the world of medical devices. For a testing laboratory the relevant benchmark is ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, granted in the UK by UKAS, and it is what the Ministry of Justice requires before adding a laboratory to its list.


Can DNA be tested from bones?

Yes, it is technically possible, and Loci has made it a speciality. The DNA in bone is fragmented and often degraded, which lengthens turnaround times, may yield only a partial profile, and calls for cautious interpretation of whatever the analysis produces.


Is my genetic data protected if I send a sample to Vietnam?

Vietnam is not covered by UK adequacy regulations. Its Personal Data Protection Law, in force since January 2026, does treat genetic data as sensitive and requires explicit consent for processing it, but exercising those rights from the UK against a private provider is far from straightforward. Ask specifically about the retention period, your ability to demand destruction of the sample, and whether your profile will be added to a database.
